Vitamin A is an important group of substances that supports various bodily processes such as cell growth, mucous membranes and skin. Even healthy hair needs this valuable vitamin to stay strong and to avoid hair loss.

Vitamin A is one of the fat-soluble vitamins and describes a large number of chemical compounds that are either supplied directly through food or are produced indirectly from carotenes by the body. Vitamin A is often equated with retinol, which belongs to the same group of compounds.

Vitamin A is one of the body’s most important nutrients and can be used to treat numerous ailments. It is often called the eye vitamin because it promotes the processing of light. People who don’t get much fresh air or spend a lot of time in front of a screen should ensure they are getting adequate Vitamin A. The daily requirement varies according to age, gender and lifestyle and ranges from 0.8 to about 1.0 mg for an adult.

HISTORY OF VITAMIN A

As far back as the 15th century, medical scholars in Far Eastern cultures such as China were using vitamin A-rich products to treat patients. At that time, however, it was not known that the active ingredient contained the vitamin in question, and the physicians were much more likely to believe that any healing effect was due to the food itself. Nonetheless the connection between food, nutrients and health that we take for granted today was established.

For example, deficiency in essential fatty acids is now known to create long-term growth problems in animals. And in 1913, when researchers first isolated the substance that came to be known as Vitamin A, or retinol, it became apparent that the human body relies on certain essential nutrients.

In 1916 the different vitamins were categorised and in 1920 Vitamin A was named for the first time. Since then its influence on the body, its derivation and the consequences of deficiency have been continually researched to enable the vitamin to continue to be used for human health.

FOODS CONTAINING VITAMIN A

Vitamin A can be found in numerous animal and plant foods, such as:

  • Carrot
  • Mango
  • Corn
  • Spinach

as well as chicken, cod and egg yolk. Some foods need to be cooked for their Vitamin A content to be available, while others are best eaten raw. Then there are various nutritional supplements, such as Frummi, that contain Vitamin A.
